ScienceWire Data Mining Web Service
ScienceWire is Discovery Logics infrastructure of databases and algorithms containing projects, people and ideas.
It is not a single tool, but a web of insights and approaches that characterize the companys ability to discover new
knowledge.
Discovery Logic has found that within every database lies an ecosystem of knowledge and communication patterns that can be
discovered and teased apart to reveal still richer patterns of knowledge. This is done through continuous adjustments of each
database, including ranking, collapsing, aggregating, and cleansing. Once a potentially useful pattern is recognized and expressed in
software code, the value of that database rises. When another pattern emerges, the value rises further, and so on. And when the patterns of
multiple databases can be linked algorithmically to each other, still more possibilities emerge, increasing the net knowledge available to
clients. ScienceWire™ is the ever-emerging framework by which Discovery Logic explores and comes to understand these flows of
knowledge and puts them to use in new standards, analytic approaches, and flexible modes of information management.
Functionally, ScienceWire includes several layers of software, beginning with the basic ETL layer (extract, transform, load) by which
software and database engineers extract and update dozens of open-source and proprietary databases on a regular schedule. Built upon that is
the Data Access layer, the custom software and other tools by which the databases are mined, manipulated, and transformed into
ever-more-useful data. Interacting with the Data Access layer is the ScienceWire Portfolio Layer, where the data is transformed into data
products. These products may be created through such steps as geocoding, record disambiguation, results ranking, citation linking, or other
algorithm-based tools that refine the data for a particular use. The last layer, the ScienceWire Web Services layer, allows rapid design of
custom software applications. This layer may be envisioned as a kind of conduit or “retail space” through which the product is
presented to a client or otherwise made available for use.
As government, industry, and academia depend ever more on large databases, the ability of ScienceWire to extract hidden value from multiple
databases and link multiple databases together is certain to benefit more institutions and individuals. ScienceWire™ itself grows
steadily in value as it expands in all directions – a knowledge ecosystem without boundaries.
